How to Enjoy the Sun This Summer While Pregnant
It’s SUMMER! That means it’s about to get hot, hot, hot; especially in South Carolina, and even more especially when you’re pregnant. Even though it can be hot and quite uncomfortable for pregnant women during summer, there are still ways to enjoy some fun in the sun safely.
Exposure to the sun is incredibly important for your body, and this remains true during pregnancy. The sun helps you synthesize Vitamin D, which we all need in order to strengthen our bones and keep us healthy. When you are pregnant, the vitamin D you take in also helps your baby’s bones, teeth, kidneys, heart, and nervous system to develop.
Of course, there is such a thing as too much sun when you aren’t taking proper precautions. It is essential to protect your skin with sunscreen, hats, and cooling fabrics to help with the amount of exposure your skin and your baby is getting. When choosing your sunscreen, look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Mineral or physical sunscreens are pregnancy-safe options because they are hypoallergenic and sit on the skin instead of being absorbed by it!
